Territory

The territory is well-known as the tuff area, characterized by striking rocky settlements, villages and medieval fortifications, situated near to important inhabited places of the Etruscan-Roman period. The historical artistic and landscape characteristics of this area are indeed unique. The archaeological tuff area is extending in a vast zone between Pitigliano, Sorano and Sovana and comprises several Etruscan necropolises scattered in the territory and connected between them by a suggestive contemporary road net developping in cuttings between steep rocky tuff walls: these roads are called "Vie Cave" or "Cavoni" ("cava" engl. word for quarry, that is a kind of “quarry roads”). Within the Archaeological Tuff Park they are cathing the eye above all because of their particularity: the Archaeologic area of Sovana and the Etruscan tombs digged into the tuff nearby Sorano.
